Adding to my list of concerns is the issue of whether we can still have kids later. The idea was to have babies in our late 30s. So in some twisted way, the universe made sure that things went as planned.
The question is, can I still get pregnant post-chemo?
The direct answer by my doctor was yes, but we’ll have to wait for at least 2 years.
And we can only start counting after I’ve finished all 4 of my chemo rounds and started taking Tamoxifen – pills given to premenopausal women as a form of breast cancer treatment. What it does is it blocks the activity of estrogen in the breast (an in my whole body basically).
Ideally, Tamoxifen pills should be taken daily for the next 10 years. But for younger cancer patients like me who wish to have children, she suggested that I go ahead with Tamoxifen for at least 2 years before considering pausing it so we can try getting pregnant. In fact, she was confident that fertility will not be an issue as she’s had patients who’ve successfully conceive post-treatment.
Of course, the internet tells me the opposite.
Reports of infertility among women who have undergone chemotherapy was everywhere. Plus, 2 years later I’ll be 38 years old already. Sometimes I hate overloading my mind with stuff I read online. It does me nothing good and contributes to my anxiety.
In the beginning we were thankful that we don’t have kids and put them through this ordeal. Especially if they’re young. But now we really want kids.
I guess we’ll just have to patiently wait. My mind had slipped back into tunnel mode.
